Siesikai Manor - Antanas Smetona residence – baking a tree cake - kugel - Taujėnai Manor – mead degustation

You will start your one-day sightseeing tour by bus at the Antanas Smetona residence-manor, located on the picturesque southern shore of Lake Lėnas, close to the President's birthplace - Užulėnis. In 1934, on the occasion of the President's birthday, it was decided to give him a farm in his homeland. The estate in Užugiris was a place of rest and reflection for the President. President Smetona was only able to spend a few summers at the Užugiris courtyard manor, as the Užugiris courtyard manor was nationalised in 1940, when the Soviets occupied Lithuania. However, the manor is filled with the spirit of the interwar period.

After the excursion you will take part in a demonstration of baking  a tree cake. You will see the dough used to bake a real „Šakotis“, how to bake it properly, what tools are used and watch the baking process of baking, followed by a tasting of the tree cake itself.

Later on you will visit the Siesikai Manor-castle, which is about half a thousand years old. It is the only survived Renaissance-style fortified residential building in Lithuania. The first palace of the manor was the residence of the Daumantas-Siesikis family, a noble family of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.  The Siesikai Manor had as many as eight forms of ceramic tiles. The owner of the manor will tell the very interesting history of the manor, show the very rare Arabesque tiles found by archaeologists in the castle (the originals are kept in the National Museum) and reveal fragments of wall paintings and legends.  

At the end of your bus trip you'll visit a third-generation beekeeper, whose apiary is buzzing with around 200 beehives. You will taste 9 different types of mead.  During the tasting, you will learn about the history, consumption customs and production peculiarities of the oldest Lithuanian alcoholic drink.
