Sightseeing trip around Latvia: Medicine History Museum - Art Nouveau style - Blackheads House - Riga

The first interesting attraction of this trip is the Medicine History Museum in Riga. The Latvian Medicine Museum is one of the three largest medical museums in the world. In the museum, you will learn from the guide about the first steps of the evolution of medicine. How were the injuries treated, what were the treatment methods of traditional medicine. Most important in ancient times was mythical medicine - amulets, witches, shamans and magicians. While walking through the museum exposition, you will see the medieval hospital and the treatment methods of that time. On the next floor, there is an exhibition of medical science advances. You will learn how X-rays were discovered and used in medicine, how the first operations with anesthesia were performed, tuberculosis was treated and how the smallpox vaccine was discovered. One of the museum's spaces is dedicated to space and medical research, in which Latvian scientists also participated during the USSR.

Later, on this one-day sightseeing bus tour for groups, you will listen to the narration of the guide and explore the Art Nouveau buildings on Albert Street, also known as the Pearl of Art Nouveau. Art Nouveau style appeared at the middle of the 19th and 20th centuries. Surprising in its diversity - from sumptuously decorated house facades to completely ascetic decoration of buildings, the Art Nouveau style saw functionality as one of the most important criteria of the new living space, which was manifested in the arrangement of rooms and the use of new materials. Riga was one of those European capitals where the newly born style manifested itself loudly and vividly.

Next, you will go to the home of the Blackheads. The building was built as a place for various meetings and receptions of the Riga community; In the 17th century, its sole owners were members of the Blackheads community - enterprising and cheerful merchants (mostly Germans). One of the figures of the community was Saint Maurice, the commander of the Roman legion, who suffered a painful death by being beheaded. Therefore, the representation of a black head became a sign of recognition of the Blackheads. The house is one of the most beautiful buildings in Riga. You will visit the hall of impressive beauty and the cellars, where you can learn about the history of the House of the Blackheads and the Brotherhood.

You will continue your acquaintance with Riga in the Old Town. A short sightseeing tour. The Old Town has unique residential complexes and sacred buildings - the Riga Cathedral, the construction of which began in the 13th century, the Gothic St. Peter's Church, residential complex "Three Brothers", Riga Castle, etc. In the Middle Ages, Riga was a powerful port city of the Hanseatic League, which united the merchants of the Baltic region and Northern Germany. The Hanseatic era is remembered by the historic Great and Small guilds, Old Riga is a masterpiece of architecture. The guide will tell you about how the city was built, what events were important for the development of the city and many other interesting things.
